When concrete shows signs of wearing such as deep widespread cracking, spalling, sinking, frost-heave or any other surface deterioration, complete removal and replacement of the concrete may be necessary. At this stage, improving the structural integrity of the slab is our main goal. In most cases, a concrete overlay or resurfacing product is a short term repair, as the concrete surface would show signs of the same types of deterioration soon after the repair was made.
When surface imperfections are present in existing concrete, a concrete overlay may be the most cost-effective method of repair in opposition to removal and replacement. Many of today's overlay systems combine polymer resins with cement and additives to improve wear resistance and aesthetic qualities. Concrete overlays may be applied as thin as 1/16 of an inch thick up to several inches. Additionally, concrete overlays are often done in conjunction with stamped concrete applications.
Stamped concrete could be referred to as textured or imprinted concrete that is made to look like stone, slate, cobblestone, or flagstone, and even brick or wood. By adding base colors to the concrete prior to placement, then applying a release color to create a cost-effective, natural, and authentic look, concrete can assume any color, shape, design, pattern, or texture through the use of stamped concrete.
• 5 bag (3000psi) or 6 bag (3500psi) mix
Amount of Portland cement bags used per yard which dictates compression strength of concrete
• 5% to 8% air-entrainment
Air added during concrete mix process to help prevent spalling in the wintertime
• 3 to 5 inch slump
Involved in consistency of concrete and dictates how firm the concrete will be. For example, a 3" slump could be used for curbs, where a 5" slump may be used for concrete sidewalks and patios.
• Sub-base preparation
Ensure that the quality of the stone base is acceptable to allow the concrete to float independently of the ground.
• Drill and dowel
If necessary, drill into the foundation of the surrounding structure, install 1/2" or 5/8" rebar in the middle of the poured slab and in foundation to prevent heaving of slab during freeze-thaw cycles.
• Thickness of slab
Determined by amount of load distress site will be experiencing
• Rebar
Steel bar used as a tension device within concrete applications to strengthen and hold the concrete in place
• Wire mesh
Similar to rebar, however, commonly used in flatwork applications and provides larger surface coverage
• Fiber
Typically, contains glass fibrous material that greatly increase the structural integrity of concrete. It contains short discrete fibers that are uniformly distributed and randomly oriented.
